Kyla received a Bachelor of Science in English Education from Hampton University and a Master’s degree in social work from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
Kyla is a licensed master social worker and for the past 22 years has worked with individuals experiencing homelessness at Parkland Health’s Homeless Outreach Medical Services Program (HOMES).
Kyla started her career with HOMES as a social worker. After being on the front line of homeless services, Kyla was promoted as a Senior Community Development Specialist and Program Manager for the HOMES program. In 2020, Kyla became the Project Director for HOMES with responsibility for an eight-million-dollar budget including both federal grant monies and Parkland Health resources collectively. HOMES is a 330(h), healthcare for the homeless, federally qualified health center, serving Dallas County providing access to primary health care for the homeless population. HOMES provides primary healthcare, dental and behavioral healthcare services through multiple mobile units and 3 fixed site locations. In 2022, HOMES served 8716 unduplicated patients and 35,437 encounters. Kyla is a versatile and approachable leader to her approximately 60 multidisciplinary staff members. Based on 2022 data submitted to Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) HOMES received several health quality recognition badges including access enhancer, health center quality leader (gold level), health disparities reducer and patient centered medical home. The HOMES program continues to increase services and collaborative efforts in the Dallas community under her leadership.
As the former caregiver for her late father Donald, Kyla recognizes the importance of caring for the caregiver. In her spare time, Kyla enjoys spending time with her family, supporting her 2 school age children as a cheer mom and baseball mom, traveling with her husband of 15 years, and serving her community through various volunteer service organizations including, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., The Links Incorporated and Jack and Jill of America.
